Peñiscola

Peñiscola is located just above the main town of the region, Castellón de la Plana and is known for the 14th century castle which is situated on a huge rock with you cab observe from a distance. The Castle, strategically located on a peninsula and built between 1294 and 1307, stands on the ruins of an old Arab citadel. It's half an hour away by car. You can shop while you walk up to the Castle. The castle is open to the public and gives a nice view of the village and often there is also a changing exhibition in one of the castle rooms. In the depths of winter, many shops are closed, please take notice of this. You can make a boat trip from the port of Peñiscola "Golondrina" to look at Peñiscola from the sea, witch gives you a very nice view on Peniscola.

Morella

This beautiful old medieval village is located at one hour drive from Sant Carles.
Morella is known for its blankets and knitting. Here you can find nice, warm sweaters for the Dutch winters.
There are also many small nice shops. You will find several museums with archaeological discoveries (dinosaurs and fossils in the area are found) and you can visit the castle.
It is a nice day trip to see more of the interior of the province of Castellon. Keep in mind that in the winter there is a lot fresher, a vest or jacket is not a luxury!

Sanctuario Virgen de la Balma-Zorita

Sanctuario Virgen de la Balma-Zorita is an impressive place to visit and nice to combine with a visit to San Mateu or Morella.
It exists for the half out of a church (built in 1667) and the other half out of a cave, where, of course, a Maria apparition took place (otherwise it could not be a "sanctuario").
A shepherd was by a light beckoned to the cave and his paralyzed arm was healed. From that time on, the place is a pilgrimage where people go to redeemed of the devil or to cure diseases.
At the beginning of the cave is a small restaurant that is also a hotel. In the weekend is the sanctuario is open from 11.00 to 20.00, on weekdays, it is closed between the afternoon (between 13.00 and 16.30) and on Mondays the entire day.
